EXOTIC JAPAN SHIPS: INTERACTIVE CD-ROM OFFERS COMPREHENSIVE INTRODUCTION TO
MODERN JAPANESE CULTURE AND LANGUAGE
The release of Exotic Japan was announced today by The Voyager Company (Santa
Monica, CA). The CD-ROM product, designed to familiarize business executives,
travelers, and students with the basics of modern Japanese culture and
language, uses a unique interactive combination of text, sound, and animation.
Exotic Japan is organized in the form of an interactive journey along the
centuries-old Tokaido Road from Kyoto to Tokyo. Over 150 lessons provide
information which visitors to Japan will find indispensable. With an input
device, users record and play back their own voices, patterning them after
voices heard on the CD-ROM. Male and female native speakers guide users
step-by-step through proper pronunciation and grammar, in addition to offering
the listening practice necessary for effective comprehension.
The graphics and animations are exceptional. The classic woodblocks of renowned
Japanese artist Hiroshige's Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido have been
beautifully reproduced. Animated sequences illustrate important "how-to"
information such as the proper use of chopsticks and the correct way to bow and
exchange business cards when meeting Japanese associates. Other sequences break
kanji into their component parts, providing a unique and effective way to
recognize and remember characters. Detailed insights into Japanese customs and
history are offered; Exotic Japan also covers such essentials as business and
social etiquette and travel tips. Clever sound effects and authentic Japanese
musical passages round out this unique package.
Exotic Japan is completely user-driven. With a click of the mouse, the user can
repeat, retrace or skip any of the over 150 lessons, as well as navigate
through the art and music sequences, quizzes, and game. The quizzes and game
test user comprehension; the interactive program tracks progress, notes which
lessons have been completed, and offers helpful hints to improve comprehension.
Developed by Japanese language instructor Nikki Yokokura, Exotic Japan runs on
any Macintosh computer with a hard disk drive and compatible CD-ROM player.
Perfect for use in the school, the office, and the home, this newest addition
to Voyager's growing line of high quality software combines beautiful design
with innovative interactivity.
Voyager is a publishing company exploring the uses of interactive electronic
media. Their CD-ROM and videodisc software products use the personal computer
to erase the arbitrary line between education and entertainment, offering
unparalleled presentation of information, fully interactive learning, and
exciting opportunities to exercise the imagination.
